How do I create a Board accessible to people with disabilities?

Inclusion is at the heart of collaboration. For it to be total, your Klaxoon activities must be accessible to all.

Here are our best practices for creating more accessible boards.

1 - For visually impaired people (contrast and screen readers)

  • Use high color contrasts: Avoid writing in light yellow on a white background. Use dark text on a light background, or light text on a dark background.

  • Don't just rely on the colour: Don't use color as the only information. Instead of saying "ideas in red are urgent," create a "Urgent" text category or add a specific icon.

  • Describe important images: If you are using an image to convey information, add an adjacent text box that briefly describes it.

  • Structure your Board logically: Organize your Board in a logical way (e.g. from left to right, top to bottom) so that the reading order is consistent.

2 - For people with motor disabilities (keyboard navigation)

  • Limit the number of objects: A Board with thousands of objects can be very difficult to navigate with the "Tab" key. Group ideas into defined areas.

  • Provide clear instructions: Keyboard navigation on an infinite canvas is not easy. Create an "Instructions" area that explains how to participate in the activity.

3 - For everyone (readability and clarity)

  • Use a legible font and sufficient size: Keep the default fonts and make sure the text size is comfortable to read without having to zoom in excessively.

  • Create a clickable summary: For very large boards, create a "Contents" area at the beginning with text boxes.

  • Keep your design clean: Avoid overloading your Board with decorative images or GIFs that can distract and slow down loading.
