TL;DR
Move Mural boards to Klaxoon by exporting them as PDFs, keeping each under 50 MB and 10 pages, then importing into Klaxoon’s PDF conversion to recreate editable shapes and text. Use Mural outlines, simplify styling, and verify each PDF’s size, pages, and layout before import for the cleanest results.

Overview
You can move whiteboards from Mural to Klaxoon by exporting them as PDFs, then using Klaxoon’s PDF conversion to turn them into editable content. This article walks you through preparing your Mural whiteboards, exporting them correctly, and checking the PDFs so they import cleanly into Klaxoon.
Understand Klaxoon PDF Import Limits
Klaxoon imports external whiteboards mainly through PDF conversion. When you import a PDF into a Klaxoon board, Klaxoon converts PDF content into editable elements where possible.
Key limits for Klaxoon PDF import:
- Maximum file size: 50 MB per PDF
- Maximum pages: 10 pages per PDF
-
Editable conversion:
- Simple shapes, text, and layouts usually become editable objects.
- Complex styling, custom fonts, or very detailed drawings may come in as static images.
- Dynamic content (such as video or GIFs) is exported as static, printable elements. Export these files separately and reinsert them in Klaxoon.
If a specific element must stay editable, plan to review and adjust or recreate it in Klaxoon after import.
Step 1: Prepare Your Mural Whiteboard
Think of this as a quick pre-check. A clean, organized Mural board usually converts better and stays within Klaxoon’s limits.
Simplify complex content
-
Reduce overlapping elements:
Minimize overlapping shapes, text boxes, and images so Klaxoon can detect distinct objects more accurately. -
Use standard fonts and simpler styles:
Prefer common fonts and straightforward styling. Custom fonts or highly stylized elements might be flattened into images. -
Group related objects:
Grouping related shapes and text in Mural can help keep them together during PDF export and conversion.
Organize With Outlines for Large Whiteboards
For large or content-heavy whiteboards, use Mural’s Outline feature to break your board into sections. Each outline item becomes its own page in the exported PDF.
How outlines help
- Keep your content organized by section
- Stay within Klaxoon’s 50 MB file size and 10-page limits
- Improve conversion quality by turning large boards into smaller, focused ones
Create an outline in Mural:
- Open your Mural whiteboard.
- Right-click the slide, area, or object(s) you want to add to your outline.
-
Click or hover over Add to 1.
-
Select Presentation outline 2.
- Give the outline item a clear, descriptive name 3.
- Drag and resize the outline box to cover a specific area of your whiteboard.
-
Repeat for all logical sections of your whiteboard.
Important information
Make sure each outline section will export to 10 pages or fewer. If one section would exceed this, split it into smaller outline items before exporting.
Handle Large Images and Embedded Files
High-resolution images and embedded documents can quickly increase the PDF size.
-
If a whiteboard contains many large images or files, consider:
- Exporting that content as a separate PDF, or
- Exporting key images as PNGs from Mural and reinserting them into Klaxoon as static images.
- Export videos or GIFs separately and add them directly in Klaxoon, since they’ll be static in the PDF.
Step 2: Export Your Whiteboard From Mural
Once your whiteboard is prepared and outlined, export it to PDF.
-
Open your Mural whiteboard
- Go to the whiteboard you want to export.
-
Open export options
- Click the Download as icon (cloud with a down arrow in the top-left),
- Or right-click the canvas and select Download as,
- Or use the shortcut Ctrl + E (Windows) or Command + E (Mac).
-
Select PDF format
In the Format dropdown, choose PDF file. -
Choose what to export
In the export dialog, pick one of:-
Outline (recommended for most migrations)
- Use this if you organize your board with outlines.
- Mural generates a multi-page PDF where each outline item is a page.
- Best option for large boards and staying within Klaxoon’s page limits.
-
Selection
- Select specific content on the whiteboard before opening Download as, then choose Selection.
- Use this when an outline section is still too large or you only need part of the board.
-
All content
- Use this only for small, simple whiteboards that you’re confident will stay under 50 MB and 10 pages.
Important information
For large or complex boards, Outline is strongly recommended to avoid hitting Klaxoon’s limits.
-
Outline (recommended for most migrations)
- Download the PDF
- Click Download.
- Mural processes the export; this can take a few moments for large boards.
-
Your PDF will either download directly to your Downloads folder, or you’ll receive an email with a download link.
Step 3: Verify Your Exported PDF
Before importing into Klaxoon, quickly review each PDF.
-
Open the PDF
- Confirm that all key content is present.
- Check that the layout and page order match your expectations (especially if you used outlines).
-
Check file size and page count
- Right-click the PDF on your computer and open Properties (or Get Info on Mac) to see the file size.
- Scroll through the PDF to check how many pages it contains.
-
Make sure each PDF is:
- 50 MB or smaller, and
- 10 pages or fewer
-
If any PDF exceeds these limits, return to Mural and:
- Split large outline sections into smaller ones, or
- Export smaller selections instead of the entire board.
