Overview
Use host-controlled mode to run a quiz with one question at a time during a Session. In this article, we’ll show you how to add a Quiz to a Session, switch it to host-controlled mode, and use the timer during the activity.
How to Manage a Question-By-Question Quiz
Prepare the activity
- Add the Quiz activity 1 to the Session.
- On the Quiz card, click the three-dot menu 2.
- Select Edit 3.
- Choose Host-control mode 4.
Run the activity
- Share the Session with participants.

Use the timer tool
- During the activity, click Manage your timing 1, and select the Timer tool 2.
- Start a countdown 3 when you launch a question.
- Choose whether to 4:
- Play a Klaxoon sound at the end of the timer.
- Pause the participant’s activity screen when the timer ends.
- Click Start 5.

Yes. You can view the success rate in the dashboard whether the Quiz runs in a Session or as a stand-alone activity.
To view individual answers:
For a stand-alone Quiz, download the activity data in XLS or CSV format. You can do this even if the Quiz is still open.
For a Quiz in a Session, download the report in XLS or CSV format.
Quiz modes control how participants move through questions.
- Free mode: Participants move to the next question after answering, even if the answer is incorrect. They can also view the correct answer.
- Question-by-question (Evaluation) mode: Participants must answer correctly, or reach the required score, to move on. If they don’t, they need to try again.
- Question-by-question (Host-control) mode: In Sessions only, participants wait for the host to launch the next question, so everyone moves at the same pace.
