TL;DR

Closing a Board (available in the New Board Experience) sets it to read-only mode for all participants, preventing further edits while preserving content. To close a board, navigate to Board settings via the title caret and select Close. Once closed, users can only navigate and zoom; all editing tools, comments, and engagement features are disabled. Only Authors or Co-Authors can reopen the board to resume activity.

Overview

Closing a Board allows you to finalize a session and prevent further changes. When a Board is closed, it enters a read-only mode for all users. This feature ensures that the content of your session remains preserved exactly as it was when the activity ended.

Note: This feature is currently available only with the New Board Experience.

How to Close a Board

To switch a Board to read-only mode:

1. Open the relevant Board.
2. Click the caret icon 1 (arrow) located in the upper-left corner next to the Board's title.

3. Select Board settings 2 from the dropdown menu.
4. Click the Close 3 button.
5. A pop-up window will appear asking if you want to permanently close the activity 4. 

6. Click Close activity 5 to confirm.
7. After you close a board, its title shows that it’s closed 6.

Working with a Closed Board

Once a Board is closed, the interface changes to prevent edits.

Available Actions

Participants (including Authors and Co-Authors) can perform the following actions:

• Navigate: Move around the board using the Hand symbol.

• Zoom: Use the zoom controls to zoom in or out of the Board view.

  

Unavailable Actions

All updatable actions are disabled. The following features are not available while the Board is closed:

• Board Settings: Authors cannot edit participant permissions, create/use sticky notes, update background colors, or use smart groups.
• Participant Management: You cannot manage participants or manage access requests.
• Zones: Managing zones is disabled.
• Engagement Tools: The Engage & Interact functionality is grayed out. Users cannot create Polls, Ratings, Surveys, Challenges, Yes/No questions, Dot-voting, Open Questions, or Storms.
• Time Management: Tracking and managing time (Timer) is disabled.
• Communication: Adding a new comment is not possible on the Board, but users can still read existing comments in read-only modes.
• Views: Switching between Board View, Column View, and List View is disabled.

• Toolbar: The main editing toolbar is hidden.

  

Note: If you attempt to perform any of the restricted actions listed above, a pop-up window will appear asking you to Reopen the activity first.

How to Reopen a Board

If you need to make changes to the Board or resume the session, an Author or Co-Author must reopen it.

1. Click the caret icon 1 next to the Board title.

   

2. Select Board settings 2.
3. Click Reopen 3.
